One of the best performances from this year’s CMT Awards was, by far, Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood’s new duet, “Somethin’ Bad” (in fact, that song is so good it made our Top Ten Hot New Summer Jams). The song is a great example of just how great women in country music are – Two of country’s biggest leading ladies coming together for a full-on duet that’s not about falling in love, falling out of love, or taking revenge on love, but is, instead, a story about two women looking to get into a little old-fashioned, Thelma-and-Louise-style trouble (hopefully minus the car crash at the end).
There are two things we absolutely love about this song: (1) It is a true melding of rock and country, sass and class, and good and naughty fun – which all women need sometimes – and (2) It puts two strong, chart-topping women on the same song without any drama. Unfortunately, when two women in any genre release albums, singles, or videos at the same time or with similar content, the media always frames it as a cat fight – only one can win. This has happened to both Miranda and Carrie before, but these two women have worked hard to prove that just because chart placement and radio play can be a competition, it doesn’t mean that we can’t all get along.
We need more women in country giving us stories that only they can give. As much as we love bro-country, it's nice to hear some ladies singing about something other than drinking beer out of the back of a truck.
So now that these two blondes have shown just how awesome girl power can look and sound in country music, hopefully we can see more women in country music coming together, sticking up for each other, winning major awards, taking names, kicking butt, and – fingers crossed – actually using the word “feminist” without being hogtied. After all, sometimes something good can come out of "Somethin' Bad."
