It’s been two years since we’ve had an official Zedd album. Since the release of his debut LP, Clarity, Zedd has been busy being featured on hit soundtracks, like Divergent, and hit singles, like Ariana Grande’s “Break Free.” Now, Zedd is ready to return to the forefront with his first single from his yet-unnamed sophomore album and he is bringing along his rumored girlfriend, Selena Gomez, for the ride. Selena has also been fairly absent from the music business until last fall’s release of “The Heart Wants What it Wants” from her compilation album, For You. With this new track, both artists are poised to return to the music industry with a bang.

“I Want You to Know” starts off with a musical flourish that is all Zedd. A strong synth presence is felt throughout the whole song and keeps the track from dragging. Then, the opening line of the chorus hits, with Selena singing, unapologetically, “I want you to know that it’s our time.” Truer words may have never opened a song before. The chorus runs the risk of sounding cocky, but the two artists work together to make the line sound more like a triumphant claim for their happiness than an egotistical rant.

The song continues, “I want you to know that I’m all yours.” Selena and Zedd do not lie with this line, either. The song is indeed ours for the listening and jamming out to. Zedd carefully produces the music so that the background does not drown out Selena’s vocals, allowing her maturing voice that she showcased on “The Heart Wants What it Wants” to quietly speak to our awaiting ears on the verses. Zedd, however, is not afraid to bring the music back during breaks between verses and in the chorus, giving us the perfect opportunity to dance – one of Zedd’s fortes in the music world. |
Honestly, we are not sure we could have asked for a better pairing (okay, so we’re still waiting for an Adele and Kanye West duet, but this will do for now). Both Zedd and Selena Gomez have been silently awaiting their official returns to radio and to the charts, and “I Want You to Know” is just the song to help both artists make a strong statement about the direction their music will be taking in the future. The track is sure to be playing in every club by the time summer hits and, maybe by then, we can have a mini-documentary, similar to Zedd’s Moment of Clarity, about the making of this surprise pairing.
