Jazmine Sullivan busted onto the scene in 2008, largely due to “Bust Your Windows,” a revenge song like no other that showcased her vocals and her songwriting abilities, and her work as a songwriter with artists like Dr. Dre, Jennifer Hudson, and Missy Elliott. However, after two albums, the music industry lost its appeal and Jazmine decided to take a break. Now, three years since her last release, Jazmine returns with the Meek Mill-assisted “Dumb.” Does the new single stand up to her previous singles and can it return her to the forefront of the music scene?
Unlike Jazmine’s other famous “dumb, cheating guy gets what he deserves” song, “Bust Your Windows,” “Dumb” does not seek revenge. There is no need to take out the anger at being cheated on; she is more than satisfied simply revealing to her lover that she’s not the one who is dumb. Also unlike “Bust Your Windows,” Jazmine’s vocals don’t go into a belt at any point in the song. Instead, much like her maturity in handling her man’s cheating, Jazmine allows her lyrics and vocal control to mature and saturate the song with a mood that is haunting and freeing at the same time, making the song a must-buy that you will be listening to on repeat.
