Ever since Fifth Harmony came in third on The X Factor back in 2012, they have slowly been building their way up globally-recognized girl band status. Their EP, Better Together, hit #6 on the Billboard 200 and led to three more EPs – a remix version, an acoustic version, a Spanish language version, and an acoustic Spanish language version. They then released their debut album, Reflection, with the lead single “BO$$.” While the song was certified platinum, it was nothing compared to the smash success of their most recent single from the album, “Worth It,” which peaked at #12 on the charts. Now the ladies are back at it again with a brand new single.

“I’m in Love with a Monster” is different from any previous Fifth Harmony single because the song is actually for the new movie Hotel Transylvania 2. Performing a soundtrack song is a smart move for the ladies: They’re still riding high off the success of “Worth It,” they’re in between albums, and, since the movie is hailed as a family affair that’s fun for all, the single will be heard by Fifth Harmony fans of all ages. This sort of business strategy shows that Fifth Harmony and their management are planning on the ladies being here for the long run, which is great news for us since we love the ladies and we love this song.

The song itself is a mixture of funky horns and bass with a jazz swing and a pop swagger – and don’t even get us started on how much we are loving the gospel vibe that builds stronger as the song goes on, climaxing in the end moments with a tambourine and “hit me [again]” demands from the band leader. The beginning starts as more of an old school jam, however. The opening beat is reminiscent of Duffy’s “Mercy,” a track that hit #1 on the UK Singles Chart and was certified platinum in both the U.S. and the UK. Speaking of precious metals, let’s talk about these lyrics – “I’ll be covered in dirt before I’m covered in gold” may be our new favorite boyfriend diss. The lyrics focus on a boyfriend who is, well, a bit of a monster. He’s not the most attentive, he doesn’t pick up on dropped hints, and he’s a bit stingy when it comes to gift giving. But, as always, you can’t fight love, even when it is with a monster. The chorus belts of the ladies’ affections, following a pre-chorus that reveals that “without you, I’d be bored all the time…[so] I’d rather be chasing love with a monster.” In the bridge, the girls continue this idea by swooning over the age-old theme of “you make me crazy, but I love it.” We get it, girls - You are currently driving us crazy with how crazy-great this song is.

“I’m in Love with a Monster” shows us that Fifth Harmony are more musically diverse than we have previously seen. It also shows us that the girls are not afraid to work with universal themes, like being in love with a guy who isn’t always Prince Charming. Most importantly, it shows us that Fifth Harmony are evolving with each and every single they release. This is not “Worth It,” it is not “Sledgehammer,” and it is not “Miss Movin' On.” It is the natural growth of these songs, leading to the end result of a single that showcases each member’s vocals, a sassiness that only a girl group can command, and a fun, flirty attitude that is also strong and sexy. The single is a monster hit, and we’re in love with this monster.
