Honestly, everybody loves a good comeback story, and Demi Lovato’s is one that still moves us even after two years. After her stint in a treatment facility, Demi Lovato let her pain, experience, and newfound hope burst through in her Unbroken album, her best-performing album to date, and even became a judge on The X-Factor. Her last single off Unbroken, “Give Your Heart a Break,” became her first #1 single, and if Demi’s newest single is any indication, she doesn’t plan on letting it be her last. |
“Heart Attack” starts with a muffled, yet intriguing, Demi proclaiming that she’s “puttin’ [her] defenses up” to avoid the dangers of falling in love. As this intro comes to an end, the song takes an interesting turn: It goes from a highly computerized track to a guitar driven verse. The beat is strong and steady and Demi sings in a lower register that we don’t always get to admire. As she moves into the pre-chorus, she moves into the higher vocal register that we love and wow at. The instruments drop so low that Demi’s voice and message are able to clearly ring out with her transition from playing with the boys “like a Ken doll” to wanting to change her ways and “act like a girl.” |
The bridge is where Demi seems to break from her normal tradition. Her voice and lyricality do things we’ve never heard her do before. Basically, we love it, and “there’s no one else to blame” but Demi herself. Our favorite part is the very end of the bridge where Demi’s vocals haunt us in a full echo of her crazy vocal range right before the music drops out for the chorus’ return. The song is catchy and guaranteed to be a hit (especially considering its rise to #1 on the iTunes chart within 9 hours of its release).
We’re starting to notice a theme here. Demi Lovato’s last single told us that she wanted to “Give Your Heart a Break.” It seems Demi didn’t take her own advice and now she’s having a “Heart Attack.” While most doctors would recommend a trip to the ER, we’re simply going to recommend that you download and crank this tune up. But keep your meds near by, because this awesome track might just cause you to fall in love, leading to Lovatocardial Infarction (a Demi Lovato induced heart attack).
