On Monday, Taylor Swift hosted a live webchat where she not only revealed her new album title (Red), cover, and the release date (October 22), but revealed her brand new single, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" to a crowd of approximately 70,000 viewers. If you missed the live chat or simply want more, check out our Music Mania Blog with all of the details from the chat and what they mean for Swifties. Once you've done that, sit back and enjoy our review of the brand new Taylor Swift single, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." |
First of all, let's state the obvious, this is a stinking long song title. Taylor's titles are normally short and to the point. This one is a bit of a tongue twister, but it's also extremely fun to say and is memorable. Plus, who doesn't love a long song title these days (Think Justin Bieber's "As Long As You Love Me" also known as ALAYLM or Selena Gomez' "Love You Like A Love Song" also known as LYLALS)? This is the internet and we can always shorten them! We give you: WANEGBT...or, if you're more traditional, "Never Ever," as we've started calling it. |
The song, like most of Taylor's songs, is about love, specifically love that doesn't work out. The song is about the ever-annoying relationship rut titled "on-again, off-again." The most dreaded words in a relationship are not "We need to talk," but "I think we need a break." Taylor confronts the issue of taking breaks and constantly changing one's relationship status and how the idea is so ridiculous. The song even starts with "I remember when we broke up...the first time." Also like many of Taylor's previous songs, this one is definitely pointed at a celebrity ex-boyfriend. The song contains lyrics about a musician who is signed with "an Indie record that's much cooler than [hers]". Taylor also hints that her and her former beau were unable to see each other very often, citing a time when they hadn't seen each other in a month and then he asks her for a break. |
The chorus of the song is a fun, head-bobbing melody with lyrics that point to just how annoying it is when couples can't communicate, with lines like "Talk to me." With a chorus this fun, this song will probably end up being one of Taylor's better live performance songs. The best part, however, is Taylor's break from singing in the bridge where she imitates a phone conversation with a friend, explaining to the friend how her ex is lame and they are never getting back together...like ever. The song will definitely be a hit. Once the video comes out, the song will boost even more in popularity (much like her monster hit "You Belong With Me" - a video that won her a VMA). Overall, we love the song. We can't wait to see how she handles the video and performing it live. Taylor knows how to write radio-friendly jams that girls and guys alike love to listen to and blast out their car windows. | |
